Walter was a standout in both football and basketball before graduating from Marshfield High School in 1939. After enrolling at Whitewater, he became a three sport participant, winning honors in track and was an all conference end in both 1940 and 1941 in football while leading the conference in pass receiving and the team scoring. He was a member of the 1942 championship basketball team. After graduating in 1944, Walter assumed a teaching and coaching position at Duluth Central High School. He is presently Director of Athletics, Administrative Assistant, and Chairman of the Business Department of Central High. An active church member, he has also served the Duluth Teachers Association, Duluth Teachers Retirement Fund, and the District Coaches Association. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972.
