The first man ever to win four letters in major sports at Whitewater is Adrian Mitten.  He received the honor from Coach William Schreiber following the 1918 track season.  A 1918 graduate, Mitten was active in all sports at Whitewater.  He received two letters in football and basketball and won three in baseball, in addition to his single monogram in track.  Mitten was a member of the 1914 championship football team and also participated with the championship baseball teams of 1915, 1917 and 1918.  Graduating from Whitewater in 1918, Mitten coached at Muskego and Tomah high schools in Wisconsin, and then turned to the implement business in Menomonie.  In 1932 he was appointed welfare director for Olmstead County, Minn., and in 1934 moved up to Sate Welfare Director.  From 1937 to 1941 he served as Unemployment Compensation Department Head for the State of Minnesota.  During 1941 he accepted a position as organizer, field-man, and lobbyist for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.  He continued in that position until 1957, when he was named Midwest Regional Director.  He retired in 1962.  Mitten has been honored by the American Legion, and also has been named to receive a Distinguished Alumni Award.  He is currently serving a three year term on the Whitewater Foundation Committee.
