Clayton graduated from Baraboo High School in 1952 where he won letters in basketball and track. In 1951 he was a participant in the WIAA State Basketball Tournament and in 1952 was elected most valuable player by his teammates and selected to the Southern 10 All-Conference team. He earned Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in education from UW-Whitewater. While attending Whitewater, Clayton earned four letters in basketball and two in baseball. He served as captain of the basketball and baseball teams for two seasons and as president of the W-Club; and was an active leader for the reinstatement of baseball as an interscholastic sport in 1955. After graduation in 1956, Clayton taught business subjects at high schools in Monroe, Viola, Iowa-Grant and Waupun. He also coached basketball, baseball, tennis and track while teaching at these high schools. In 1967 he was selected as "Little 10 Northern Division Basketball Coach of the Year". Currently he is employed as Director of Business Services for the Menasha Joint School District and has served in this capacity since 1967. He has been active as an organizer of youth soccer in Menasha, serving as league president for eleven years. Clayton and his wife, Janet, have four children, Cindy, Jeff, Mike and Jill.
