An all-around athlete at Madison East H.S., Don starred in football, basketball, and track, playing on championship teams in track in 1945 and basketball in 1947, and earning All-State honors in basketball in 1946. At Whitewater he won four letters in football and four in basketball, and he achieved All-Conference basketball honors while leading his team to the NAIA Tournament in 1952. After graduating from Whitewater, Don served in Korea from 1952 to 1954 and was awarded the Purple Heart with cluster. He later taught and coached at Lake Geneva, Beaver Dam, and Oshkosh High Schools, and he was honored as Fox River Valley Coach of the Year in 1964 and 1967. Elected Hall of Fame 1970.
