Adam Janicsek graduated with a commercial degree in 1935 and earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Denver in 1942. While on campus he earned three letters each in football and basketball, leading the football team to a conference title in 1932. In football he was an all-conference selection twice, plus once as honorable mention. He also earned the all-conference and honorable mention distinctions each once in basketball. “Guny” was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. In 1933 he assisted Chick Agnew with scouting for the college football team and then moved on to coach the Whitewater College High football and basketball team in 1934 and 1935. While coaching he also played semiprofessional football with the Fort Atkinson Blackhawks for two years, including contests against the Boston Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers. Janicsek attended Whitewater City High School, where he played football and basketball, earning all-conference honors twice in each sport. He was a member of the 1929 conference championship basketball team. Janicsek’s 37-plus year career as a teacher, coach and counselor was interrupted by three years of service as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. As a high school coach he led the Augusta (WI) High School basketball team to a conference championship in 1936 and the Lanark (IL) High School basketball team to a championship in 1942. Janicsek was president of the University’s Alumni Association in 1963. Since his retirement from the Wauwatosa School District in 1976, Janicsek has remained active. Among other things, he has served as president of the Elmbrook Historical Society for three years and as president of the Milwaukee Ileostomy and Colostomy Association for three years. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1996.
