Howard graduated from Walworth High School in 1932 where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. A graduate of Whitewater State Teachers College in 1937 he lettered 4 years in football and was All-conference halfback in 1934. Howard also lettered 3 years in track. In 3 State meets, he placed second each year in the 100 and 200 yard dash, first and second in the long jump and was a member of the record holding 880 yard relay team for 3 years. He received the American Legion four year Athletic and Scholarship award. He also was "W" Club President and was a class officer in 1933, 1934, and 1935. Howard coached basketball and baseball at Waunakee High School, was assistant coach in all sports at Arcadia High School, and was track coach and assistant coach in the other sports at Black River Falls High School. He took time off from teaching and coaching to serve as a Lt. in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was on the Board of Directors and was secretary for the Black River Falls Lions Club. Howard is married and enjoying his retirement in Black River Falls after 37 years of teaching.
