All-State football guard in 1924 and 1925, Lyle captained Whitewater’s football conference champions of 1926. Spaulding’s Rule Book named him “Outstanding Guard in the U.S.” for 1924. President of both his junior and senior classes, Lyle was voted best senior athlete, both in studies and on the field, while at Whitewater. Later served as Menomonie High football coach and, over a coaching span of 19 years, his teams won 70% of their games. He later was line coach when the Stout State University Blue Devils won the state title in 1951. Since 1959, Lyle has served as principal of Menomonie Senior High, president of the Lions Club, and president of Menomonie Brick Co. Elected Hall of Fame 1968.
