The Whitewater football team took the Wisconsin State University Conference championship in 1974 and '75.  In football, Gerber was named AlI-WSUC and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-District in 1974  and '75 as a defensive end. In ’75 he earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors.  For baseball, where he played first base, he was again named Honorable Mention AlI-WSUC in 1974 and first team all-league in ’76.  He was also NAIA All-District 14  both years.  Gerber was co-captain of both the football and baseball teams his senior year. In addition, he was a member of the UW-W hockey team, a club sport, for two years.

Gerber graduated from UW-Whitewater in 1977 with a degree in sociology. He later went on to obtain his Masters in Education and Professional Development from UW-W. Since 1979, he has been teaching for the Burlington Area School District.   He was the head baseball coach at Burlington High School until 1989, and has been the head coach of the Burlington High School football team since 1996, after joining the staff as an assistant in 1979.
