George graduated from Central High School in Madison, Wisconsin in 1948, where he earned letters in football and track.  He enlisted in the Army in June of that year and served in Japan and Korea before attending UW-Whitewater.  At Whitewater George compete in football and track earning 4 letters in football and 1 in track.  In football he was a "both ways" player, playing defensive back, running back and sometimes "tackle".  He was voted team Most Valuable Player in 1955 and team captain and All-Conference halfback in 1956.  George graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1957.  He then taught biology and coached at Durand High School in Durand, Illinois, where he helped to initiate football as a major sport.  He became the school's first head coach.  In 1960 he moved to Lake Forest High School, Lake Forest, Illinois, as freshman football coach and compiled a 47-1 record before becoming head coach in 1966.  Coach Barry's teams have compiled an overall record of 121-55-4 in the past 20 years.  They have won 8 conference championships and have been in the Illinois state playoffs 6 of the 14 years since the playoffs began.  The "Scouts" best finish was in 1972 when they progressed to the semifinals.  George and his wife, Joan, reside in Lake Bluff, Illinois with their family: John, Jill and Molly.
