One of the most familiar names in Whitewater athletic history will be placed into the Hall of Fame in the person of Edgar H. "Ed" Schwager.  Schwager was one of the most successful athletes in Whitewater history when he attended from 1927 to 1932.  Receiving three letters in football, Schwager was also named to the all-conference team each of the years that he participated.  Schwager also gained three letters in basketball, where he was named to the all-conference team for three consecutive years.  He was the leading scorer on the basketball team for three years and was named captain of the 1929-1930 team.  He was awarded the American Legion award for athletics and scholastic achievement in 1932.  During 1931 Schwager was assistant football coach at Whitewater, and also was head coach and player for the Ft. Atkinson Blackhawks.  The Blackhawks lost only one game during that season.  The loss was at the hands of the Green Bay Packers.  Following graduation, he went to Dodgeville, where he was coach from 1932 to 1938.  His team won a football championship in 1934.  While attending graduate school at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Schwager was backfield coach of the Madison Central team which won the Big Eight Conference championship in 1940.  He received an M.A. from Wisconsin in 1941.  In 1942, Schwager returned to his alma mater, and has served in a variety of positions and is currently assistant football coach and athletic director.  He was chairman of the physical education department from 1959 to 1963.  From 1942 to 1955 he was head football coach and his team won the 1950 championship.  Serving as head basketball coach in 1942, his team won the State University Conference title.  Schwager was head baseball coach from 1954 to 1958 and his teams won championships in 1957 and 1958.  He also served as head track coach from 1946 to 1953.  He has been a member of the Whitewater American Legion and Lions Club, and also has been serving as chairman of the Water Safety committee of the American Red Cross.
