Barbara Sheffield participated in athletics at UW-Whitewater from 1970 to 1974, during the embryonic years of women’s intercollegiate athletics.  She was a member of the gymnastics and volleyball teams all four years, earning letters four times in each sport.  She qualified for the national gymnastics championship in 1973.  When not competing, she served as manager of the women’s basketball and softball teams, serving both sports all four years. A Kenosha (WI) Bradford High School graduate, Sheffield earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from UW-W in 1976, and a master’s degree in education in 1978.  She has been the head gymnastics coach at Whitewater High School since 1974, and has taught in the Whitewater School District for twenty-four years.
