Carl graduated from Don Bosco High School, Milwaukee, in 1951, where he lettered four years in football, one year in basketball and one year in baseball. At UW-Whtiewater Carl lettered for four years in football and for three years in baseball. In football he played both offense, as a center and an end, and defense, as an end and a linebacker. He was selected captain, Most Valuable Player and All-Conference as a junior under Coach Ed Schwager; and was also selected All-Conference and Most Valuable Player in his senior year under Coach Forrest Perkins. In baseball, he played first base and catcher for three seasons. Carl has coached football, basketball, baseball and golf and has taught English, social studies and drivers education at high schools in Huntley, Illinois, and Saint Francis, New Berlin, East Troy and Palmyra, Wisconsin. His overall record as a head football coach is 34 wins, 22 losses and 1 tie. In addition, as a student-teacher and as a graduate assistant, he served as an assistant varsity football coach under Forrest Perkins for the WSUC championship teams of 1959 and 1975. He played amateur and semi-pro football for the City of Cudahy and Racine Raiders football teams. In addition, he played amateur baseball and fast-pitch softball. In 1972 he received a service award from the Knights of Columbus of South Milwaukee for his 17 years of work in their grade school basketball tournament and in 1980 received a service award from the Mukwonago Lions Club. For the past 27 years he has been officiating football, basketball and baseball games and for the last 8 years he has been employed by Marhsall and Ilsley Bank at Rainbow Springs. Carl and his wife, Janice, reside in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, with their two children, Scott, 21, and Sally, 19.
