A Monona Grove High School graduate, Thompson played football and basketball for the Warhawks in the early ‘60’s.  Thompson played defensive end for the football team, earning four letters, helping the team win the 1962 state conference championship, and earning all-conference honors once.  He also played basketball during the 1961-62 season, with UW-W winning another league title.  Thompson earned tryouts with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings.  He also played four years of semi-pro football with the Delavan Red Devils.  A Madison resident, Thompson retired in 1998 after serving twenty-seven years as an accountant in the UW-Madison student loan office.
