All-American, Michael Gutter graduated from UW-Whitewater with a bachelor’s degree in 1980. He added a master’s degree in guidance and counseling in 1983. Gutter lettered in basketball in 1978-79 and 1979-80. Gutter finished tenth in scoring in the Wisconsin State University Conference, and earned honorable mention all-conference honors, as a junior. One year later he led the conference in scoring, averaging 23.8 points, and in rebounding at 10.3 per game. He was named First Team All-WSUC, First Team All-National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District 14, and Third Team NAIA All-American. He also earned NAIA District 14 and NAIA National Player of the Week honors during the 1979-80 season. He capped the season with co-MVP for the Wisconsin State University Conference. Gutter led UW-W to a 20-7 record overall and third place in the conference, his senior year. He played one year of professional basketball in Venezuela after graduation. As a student at Milwaukee Lincoln High School, he earned all-city and all-state honors twice, and All-American honors his senior year, while leading his team to the City Conference championship in 1974. Gutter, a resident of Milwaukee, is currently a social worker for the Racine County Human Services Department. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1996.
