Helom was an asset to four teams during her UW-Whitewater career. She played for four years on the women's basketball, softball, and field hockey teams, and was a member of the women's volleyball team for three years. She was a recipient of the "Most Improved" award in all of her sports, and was named MVP of the softball team. Helom was also honorary captain of the softball team.

After her UW-Whitewater graduation in 1974, Helom began teaching physical education at Janesville Parker High School. While there, she coached tennis and synchronized swimming for two years. She later went on to teach physical education at Columbus Christian Academy. In addition, Helom  coached volleyball for a year, and served as a NCAA national basketball official for two years. She is currently employed as an associate at Wal-Mart in Beloit. Helom is a native and current resident of Beloit, Wisconsin.
