Athletics Hall of Fame
Dr. James Russell is being awarded the Distinguished Service Award of the Whitewater Athletic Hall of Fame. This award is granted to persons who have significantly contributed to the success of the athletic programs of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Dr. Russell is the first recipient. Dr. Russell served as team physician at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for 19 years, from 1957-1985. In the words of Forrest Perkins, former Athletic Director and Football Coach, "Not only was he one of the outstanding team doctors in the United States, he was an outstanding counselor and friend to most of our athletes. His contributions went far beyond what most doctors do in the position of team physician." Dr. Russell is a member of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and the Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame and has received the Distinguished Service Award of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, the Distinguished Service Award of the Wisconsin High School Football Coaches Association and a Certificate of Meritorious Service from the Wisconsin State University Conference.
