Madsen had an overall record of 264-106-2 in his eleven seasons as the head coach of the women’s softball team, the twelfth winningest coach, by percentage in Division III of the NCAA softball history. Madsen received Conference Coach of the Year Awards in 1982 and 1996 and received NCAA III Regional Coach of the Year Awards in 1985 and 1986. Madsen's teams won two conference championships and earned eight AIAW or NCAA tournament bids. Madsen led his team to a seventh place finish in the 1982 AIAW Tournament, and three consecutive top five finishes in the NCAA Tournament (fourth in 1984, third in 1985, second in 1986). Madsen also directed the team to national tournament berths in 1983, placing fourth, and in 1996, placing second. Madsen's 266 wins are the highest all-time at UW-Whitewater in softball and he coached two College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-Americans (Gayle Gruber, 1985; Julie Mennen, 1986). Madsen, retired UW-W Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management, is a resident of Whitewater, Wisconsin.
