Gary Schell began the line of pole vaulters that ruled the WIAC and established a national reputation for the specialty at UW-Whitewater.   During his four years of competition he won conference titles five times (three outdoor, two indoor) and finished second twice.  He took first place indoors and outdoors both his junior and senior years.  Schell qualified for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship six times.  His best finish was third at the 1979 outdoor championship, but he had two fourths, a fifth and two sixth places.  Schell still holds the UW-W outdoor record for the pole vault, 16-8.25, set in 1979.  That height is also the highest any vaulter has ever gone at UW-W, indoors or outdoors.  He was the UW-W men’s team MVP in 1976 and 1977, and a team captain in 1979. A 1982 safety studies graduate, Schell is a safety specialist with Sacramento County (CA), and a resident of Grass Valley.  He graduated from Monona Grove (WI) High School.
