Sonnenburg was a defensive tackle on the Warhawk football team that advanced to the NAIA championship game in 1966.  He led that team, which also won a conference title, in tackles and fumble recoveries, earning all-conference honors in '66.  Sonnenburg was also one of a vanishing

breed – a multi-sport athlete.  In addition to spending falls on the gridiron, he also wrestled and threw the hammer for the Warhawk track team.  Sonnenburg, is the executive vice president of Expo-Exhibits of Itasca, Illinois.
