Two time NAIA All-American Fred Townsend is the first Warhawk wrestler to win a national championship.  Townsend won the 126 pound National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament in 1978 while being selected the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler and winning the Gorriaran Award by pinning the most opponents in the least amount of time.  He placed third at 118 pounds in the 1977 NAIA tournament.  He won two WSUC titles, in 1977 at 118 and in 1978 at 126, and was awarded the John Peterson Award as the conference tournament's outstanding wrestler in 1978.  When Townsend graduated in 1978, he had lettered in wrestling for four years and he had established a winning record of 96-11-1, the top winning record in the school's history, which still stands today.  In 1972 Fred graduated from Janesville Craig High School where he earned four letters in wrestling and one in tennis.  In wrestling he placed second in the state meet in 1972 and was a two-time team co-captain and team MVP.  Townsend is the president of Carpet Mart, Inc. of Janesville.
