Joe graduated from Delavan High School in 1929 where he lettered four times in football, four times in basketball and once in baseball. In football he played quarterback, excelling as a passer and a punter and was All-Southern Five Conference quarterback in 1928, in basketball he played both forward and guard and in baseball he played left field. In 1929 he entered UW-Whitewater and lettered three years in football and three years in basketball. "Joey", as he became known on campus, was a starting guard for three years on the basketball team and was a starting quarterback on the football team for two years. In the 1931 football season he was team captain, was elected to the All-Conference team as quarterback and is remembered for his opening kick-off return for a title-winning touchdown at Oshkosh. Joe was a member of Phi Chi Epsilon fraternity and served in 1932 as vice-president and in 1933 as pledge master. He ws a member of the "W" Club and was vice-president in 1933. Joe graduate from UW-Whitewater in 1933 with a Bachelor of Education degree. He was athletic director and teacher at high schools in Waterloo, Deerfield and Boscobel, Wisconsin. His teaching and coaching career was interrupted by World War II while he served in the Air Corps and was stationed in England from 1943 to 1946. When he returned home he was employed by Sikes Motor Sales of Delavan, the Delavan Enterprise and Jack Fagan Motors before he returned to teaching at Delavan-Darien High School. He is a past commander of American Legion Post No. 95, a past president of the Delavan Lions Club and a past Lions Club zone chairman. Sturtevant is survived by his wife, Vivian, and daughter, Carla Strating, who currently reside in Delavan.
