Gename graduated from UW-W in 1976.  He was a three-year letter winner in football earning first team all-conference in 1973 and 1974, and honorable mention in 1975.  Gename helped his team to a co-WSUC Championship in 1974 and tri-championship in 1975.  UW-Whitewater was first in the WSUC in total offense in 1974.  Gename was a five time Conference Player of the Week and still ranks in many of the school football records.  In Gename's sophomore year, he led his team with 44 catches, 591 yards, and 6 touchdowns.  In his junior year, he led with 60 catches, 802 yards, and 8 touchdowns.  In his senior year, Gename led his team with 48 catches.  He also added 482 yards and 3 touchdowns. Gename is a resident of Kenosha, Wisconsin and is the Corporate Director of Employee Relations at Jockey International.  Gename is also a member of the Tremper High School Booster Club as a basketball representative, a Temper High School basketball team parent representative, and a National Amateur Athlete Union Basketball Coach.
