Matt Young lettered three times in basketball at UW-Whitewater.  During the 1977-78 season he averaged 9.3 points and 2.1 assists; and his junior year Young upped those marks to 10.5 and 3.1.  As a senior, in 1979-80, Young scored 13.0 points per game and averaged a league-best 5.1 assists, while also shooting 52% from the field.  The 79-80 team went 20-7 overall, including a 12-4 record in WSUC play.  He was an all-conference pick in 1974 and 1975.  In '75 he repeated the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Honorable Mention All-District 14 recognition he had earning his junior year, while also serving as UW-W's captain and earning the team's Best Defensive Player Award.  Young ended his career as the school's career assist leader, and his total of 271 is still sixth on the all-time list.  Young is also third on the single season assist list (150 in 79-80), and third on the single game chart (14 on two occasions).  He is also among the top thirty in the books for career scoring average (29th, 11.0) and field goals made (25th, 360). Young graduated from Central High School in Flint, Michigan.  From 1984-96 he was the head basketball coach at Madison Area Technical College, and he has been a claims specialist with American Family Insurance in Madison since 1981.
