Dianne Jones, the most successful women's basketball coach in UW-W history, has also served the University as director of women's athletics and as a professor of health, physical education  recreation and coaching.  Jones came to Whitewater as the head women's basketball coach, assistant volleyball coach and to teach.  After two years at UW-W she left to receive her doctorate, then returned in 1979 to fill the same positions, minus volleyball.  In thirteen seasons as basketball coach the team went 229-103, earning league championships in 1980, 1981 and 1986.  Jones directed UW-W to national tournament bids eight times, including a third place finish in the 1982 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Division III championship.  She was twice named the league's basketball coach of the year and twice earned the honor on the regional level.  In 1986 she added the women's athletic director duties to her plate.  She retired from coaching in 1990 to devote more time to her role as AD and to teaching, and retired from a formal role in intercollegiate athletics in 1999.  She is now a full professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching.  Her stature among her peers led to many state, regional and national coaching committees and honors.  Jones received the Women's Sports Advocates of Wisconsin Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995, the same year she earned the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Pathfinder Award. Jones is a resident of Delavan, Wisconsin.
