Kenneth Peterson swept his specialties, the long jump and the triple jump, in the 1971 Wisconsin State University Conference championship. Peterson won both events in both league championships, indoors and outdoors, that spring. He also added the 1970 indoor long jump title to his list of individual championships. In the long jump he competed 49 times and placed first 34 times and in the triple jump he competed 31 times and was first 22 times. He set three school records in both the long jump and triple jump and was a member of a mile relay team which set a school record in 1968. He twice earned the right to represent Whitewater in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics track and field championship. In describing Peterson, Coach Rex Foster wrote, “Ken was an unselfish athlete, a natural leader and very considerate of his teammates.” While competing interscholastically at Grafton (WI) High School, Peterson lettered four times each in football, basketball and track and he was the MVP of the 1967 football team which won the conference crown. In 1966 while competing in the state meet, Ken set the Class B state high school long jump record of 23’1”. That record stands today. Kenneth was ordained as a pastor in 1983. Peterson, now deceased, was serving as a missionary in Dakar, Senegal West Africa, at the time of his passing in 1986. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997.
