"Red" graduated from Horicon High School in 1941 where he earned letters in football, basketball, and track.  As a senior, he was the League's leading scorer in football and was selected as All-Conference in football and basketball.  He attended UW-Whitewater from 1941 to March of 1943, served in World War II, returned to Whitewater in 1946 and graduated in 1948.  He lettered 4 years in football, 2 in basketball and 1 in track.  As a senior, he was chosen Most Valuable Player on the football team.  Ray taught at Wausau Senior High School for three years, coached track and hockey and assisted in football.  He was recalled by the Air Force in 1951.  In January of 1961, he was a member of the 3-man crew which established six world speed flying records, and in May 1961, the crew set two additional world speed records flying from New York to Paris.  For their performance, the crew received the Mackay Trophy given annually for the most meritorious flight of the year and were presented the Harmon Trophy by President John F. Kennedy for outstanding international achievement in aeronautics.  Ray retired from the Air Force in 1974 and returned to teaching in Fairbanks, Alaska.  He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Eielson Federal Credit Union, and is active with youth organizations of DeMolay and Rainbow Girls and serves on local and state-wide advisory councils for both organizations.
