Coming to Whitewater from Washington High School in Washington, Pennsylvania, Richie Barnes became a three-time letter winner in football. He was a three year starter at linebacker and played for the school’s Wisconsin State University conference championship team of 1974. He was a complete linebacker with great lateral pursuit from side line to side line and with excellent hand tackling. Barnes became a three time all-WSUC selection and earned National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics First Team all-District 14 and Honorable Mention all-American honors in 1974. Since he graduated in 1977, he has been active on the campus in helping student-athletes adjust to university life. He is employed as a counselor at both Ethan Allen School for Boys in Wales and Lad Lake Counseling Center in Dousman. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1992.
