John Sterner, a letter winner in both football and track and field, earned honors for his track and football playing days at Whitewater. Sterner was named twice as a men’s track and field All-American for pole vault. He placed eighth in 1987 for outdoor competition and fifth in 1988 for indoor. In football, Sterner was captain in 1989 along with Dick Schuh and Jim Sherman. In the same year, he was named as the football team’s Most Valuable Player. Sterner is tenth in career punting leaders (40 punts for 1450 yards, a 36.3 yard average) in 1988-89 and sixth for season kickoff returns with 21 in 1989. Sterner has taken his involvement with football one step farther with numerous publications related to the sport. Sterner published a book in 2003 called The Football Coaches’ Guide to Clock Management and in 2004 he published two instructional videos related to clock management. Sterner currently is an English teacher at Muskego High School.
