The No. 30 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team earned a pair of victories Monday during the first day of competition of the team's spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C.
The Warhawks (13-1 overall) bested Union (N.Y.) and Wooster (Ohio) by identical scores of 8-1.
Against Union (1-3),
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) put UW-W on the board with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) doubled the team lead with an 8-2 triumph at No. 3, and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and
Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) tallied an 8-5 victory to increase the lead to three.
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) gave the Warhawks their first singles point by a 6-2, 6-4 count at the fourth position, and Pietila clinched the dual at the fifth position with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Lindwall pulled out a third-set super tiebreaker for a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (12-10) triumph at the top slot, while Gray registered a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the third position.
Niclas Goltz (Freiburg, Germany/Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium) completed the dual with a 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) win at the second spot.
In the match against Wooster (6-5), UW-Whitewater started strong in doubles again as Mitchell and Goltz paired for an 8-5 triumph at No. 3, Zakowski and Gray earned an 8-6 victory at No. 1 and Calabria and Lindwall picked up an 8-6 win at No. 2.
Goltz put UW-W on the board in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 and Calabria clinched the dual with a third-set super tiebreak in a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory at No. 2.
Other winners included Mitchell, Pietila and Adkisson at the Nos. 4-6 spots, respectively. Adkisson dropped his first set before taking the second set and the third-set super tiebreaker.
The Warhawks conclude competition Thursday with duals against Carleton (Minn.) and Allegheny (Pa.) at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Central Time, respectively.
