The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team opened the Warhawk Invite Friday with an 8-1 triumph over Ohio Wesleyan at Lake Geneva Tennis in Lake Geneva.
The Warhawks (3-1 overall) took all three doubles matches and claimed five of the six singles matches playing in their fourth dual of the year in Lake Geneva.
Sophomore
Robert Rider (Annapolis, Md./South River) and freshman
Noah Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) started the scoring with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. Junior
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and freshman
Ryan Mitchell (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) made it 2-0 with an 8-3 triumph at No. 3, and senior
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) and freshman
Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) teamed up for an 8-5 win at the top position.
Mitchell and Gray tallied their team-leading seventh singles victories of the season at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Gray gave UW-Whitewater a four-point lead with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph, and Mitchell clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win.
Engelhart recovered from a first-set loss at the No. 1 slot for a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) victory. Freshman
Brendan Pietila (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) registered a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 4, and Guillermo capped the scoring with a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (10-4) win at the sixth position.
The Warhawks continue play at the Warhawk Invite Saturday with duals against Wheaton (Ill.) at 8 a.m. and Grinnell (Iowa) at 3:30 p.m. in Lake Geneva.
