The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams each placed third at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Presented by Culver's, which concluded Saturday at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis.
The Warhawk men scored 656 points, while the women tallied 731 points. UW-Stevens Point claimed the men's championship with a total of 971.50, and UW-La Crosse picked up the women's title with 864 points.
On the women's side, sophomore
Melanie Carlson (Waukesha, Wis./West) highlighted the night with a WIAC championship performance in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in a time of 2:09.94. Freshman
Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East) joined Carlson as an all-conference performer with a 2:10.33, good for second place. Senior
Gabby Swider (Milwaukee/St. Thomas More) finished eighth with a 2:16.94.
Sophomore
Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson) garnered All-WIAC accolades in the 200-yard breaststroke with a runner-up finish in 2:23.90. She was followed by freshman
Alexis Olson (Marengo, Ill./Marengo), who recorded a 2:33.90, good for eighth place.
Senior
Margaret Lotzer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) captured her second all-conference standing of the meet with a 17:55.80 in the 1650-yard freestyle. Sophomore
Emily Champa (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) placed fourth with a 18:32.47, and senior
McKenzie Asplund (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) posted a time of 18:44.02 to finish eighth.
Senior
Sarah Arteaga (Greenfield/Whitnall) placed third with a time of 2:06.13 and was followed by junior
Stephanie Haebig (Grafton/Grafton), who was eighth in 2:14.22.
Freshman
Renata Schlomann (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) tied sixth with a result of 53.86 in the 100-yard freestyle.
Junior
Michaela Matthys (Crystal Lake, Ill./McHenry West), senior
Grace Devine (Sussex/Hamilton), sophomore
Vada Williams (La Crescent, Minn./Holmen-Aquinas-Onalaska (Wis.)) and Arteaga combined for a time of 3:34.81 in the 400-yard freestyle relay, good for third place.
For the men, senior
Dan Bielski (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) earned All-WIAC honors for the second time in the backstroke with a runner-up in the 200 with a mark of 1:53.65. Sophomore
Chandler Lewis (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) tallied a 1:54.75 to place fourth, and junior
Sam Piette (Germantown/Germantown) collected a fifth-place medal with a 1:55.29.
Senior
Alex Carroll (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:08.97. Junior
Andrew Langenhahn (Appleton/Appleton East) placed sixth with a 2:11.52.
The Warhawks placed three in the top eight of the 1650-yard freestyle. Senior
Andrew Staszak (Franklin/Greendale) finished fifth with a 16:54.21, senior
Sam Bowman (Onalaska/Onalaska) touched the wall in 17:01.54 for sixth place and junior
Steven Missak (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) placed eighth with a 17:25.60.

Josh Kanute (Geneva, Ill./Marmion Academy) and freshman
Drew Borland (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200-yard buttefly. Kanute touched the wall in 1:55.35, and Borland finished in 1:56.58.
Freshman
Michael Steplyk (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./LakeView Technology Academy) tallied a score of 367.75 on the 3-meter diving board to place eighth in the event.
Missak, seniors
Alex Gidlow (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley),
Paul Hill (Jefferson/Fort Atkinson) and sophomore
Peter Loftus (Janesville, Wis./Craig) teamed up for a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a result of 3:08.91.
Unofficial NCAA Championship qualifiers are scheduled to be announced via press release on
NCAA.com on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Central Time.
