The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams each stand in third place after the first day of the three-day Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis.
The Warhawk women are only 18 points shy of first place with 220.5, trailing UW-La Crosse (238.5) and UW-Eau Claire (231) in the team standings.
The men trail second-place UW-Eau Claire by 25 points and have a total of 162 heading into Friday's sessions. UW-Stevens Point is first with 257 points.
On the women's side, senior
Margaret Lotzer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) highlighted the night with her first career WIAC championship in the 500-yard freestyle. She posted a time of 5:10.41, more than one second faster than the runner-up.
Senior
Grace Devine (Sussex/Hamilton) placed third in the same event with a result of 5:15.96, freshman
Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East) was seventh in 5:18.43 and sophomore
Emily Champa (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) was eighth with a 5:25.32.
Junior
Michaela Matthys (Crystal Lake, Ill./McHenry West) broke her own school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a preliminary time of 23.77, good for an NCAA "B" cut time and 12 hundredths of a second shy of last year's national meet invited time. She finished third in the final and was trailed by freshman
Renata Schlomann (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels), who tied for fifth with a mark of 24.46.
Sophomore
Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson) finished as the runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 2:06.57, good for an NCAA "B" cut and all-conference accolades. Senior
Sarah Arteaga (Greenfield/Whitnall) was third with a 2:07.81 and sophomore
Melanie Carlson (Waukesha, Wis./West) finished the race in 2:11.59, good for sixth place.
The Warhawks; 400-yard medley relay team of Schlomann, Hawker, Matthys and Arteaga earned All-WIAC honors by placing second in the conference with a time of 3:53.04. The team's 200-yard freestyle relay group of Schlomann, Matthys, Hawker and sophomore
Alyssa Haertl (Oshkosh, Wis./West) finished third with a school-record result of 1:36.09.
Four UW-Whitewater men placed among the WIAC's top eight in the 500-yard freestyle. Senior
Sam Bowman (Onalaska/Onalaska) touched the wall in 4:41.26, good for fourth place, and was followed closely by sophomore
Chandler Lewis (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg), who finished fifth in 4:41.43. Senior
Josh Kanute (Geneva, Ill./Marmion Academy) placed seventh in 4:43.92 and freshman
Drew Borland (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) finished eighth with a 4:45.56.
Sophomore
Peter Loftus (Janesville, Wis./Craig) earned a place on the podium in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:54.72, good for fourth place.
Senior

Thomas Stigler (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego), Loftus and junior
Steven Missak (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) combined to finish third in the 400-yard medley relay with a mark of 3:26.32. Seniors
Paul Hill (Jefferson/Fort Atkinson),
Alex Gidlow (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley), freshman Sam Breitenbucher and Loftus teamed up to place fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a result of 1:24.04.
The Warhawks continue action tomorrow at 10 a.m. with event preliminaries and conclude the day with finals at 6:30 p.m.
