Day 1 Recap
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams each held at third in the standings following the second day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Presented by Culver's at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis.
The Warhawk women enter the third and final day only 53 points shy of first-place UW-La Crosse and 11.5 points behind second-place UW-Eau Claire.
The men are third with 436 points and trail UW-Stevens Point (611.5) and UW-Eau Claire (481.5).
Senior
Dan Bielski (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) highlighted the day for the men, posting a school-record time of 51.06 in the 100-yard butterfly to place fourth in the event. He registered an All-WIAC, runner-up finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 50.69.
Sophomore
Thomas Stigler (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego) headed a group of three who placed among the top eight in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.59, good for fifth place. Senior
Alex Carroll (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) touched the wall sixth with a 58.91, and junior
Andrew Langenhahn (Appleton/Appleton East) placed eighth in 59.70.
Senior
Andrew Staszak (Franklin/Greendale) and freshman
Cody Heckendorf (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 400-yard individual medley. Staszak touched the wall in 4:13.15, and Heckendorf finished in 4:17.52.
Junior
Sam Piette (Germantown/Germantown) finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a 52.23, and senior
Josh Kanute (Geneva, Ill./Marmion Academy) and junior
Steven Missak (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) tied for sixth in the 200-yard freestyle with identical results of 1:44.66.
UW-Whitewater's 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relay teams each finished third in their respective races. Bielski, Stigler, sophomore
Peter Loftus (Janesville, Wis./Craig) and freshman
Ben Breitenbucher (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) combined for a time of 1:32.62 in the 200 medley relay, and Missak, Lewis, senior
Sam Bowman (Onalaska/Onalaska) and Kanute teamed up for a 6:55.01 in the 800 free relay.
Junior
Tony Benz (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa West) finished eighth on the 1-meter diving board with a score of 336.30.
Junior
Michaela Matthys (Crystal Lake, Ill./McHenry West) claimed her third straight WIAC championship in the 100-yard butterfly with a school record, WIAC Championship record and NCAA "B" cut time of 55.80 seconds. She also earned all-conference honors in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:05.66, good for second place.
Senior
Sarah Arteaga (Greenfield/Whitnall) finished as runner-up in the 400-yard individual medley to earn All-WIAC with a school record and NCAA "B" cut time of 4:32.89. Sophomore
Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson) finished third with a result of 4:34.88, also good for an NCAA "B" cut.
Freshman
Renata Schlomann (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels), Hawker, Matthys and senior
Gabby Swider (Milwaukee/St. Thomas More) combined to place second in the 200-yard medley relay with a mark of 1:45.88. Seniors
Margaret Lotzer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove),
Grace Devine (Sussex/Hamilton), Arteaga and Hawker replicated the All-WIAC performance in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a 7:48.10, good for second place.
Freshman
Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East) finished fifth in the 100 fly with a time of 59.22. Sophomore
Melanie Carlson (Waukesha, Wis./West) was sixth with a 59.38, and Swider placed eighth with a 59.96.
Lotzer headed a group of four top-eight placers in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.46. Sophomore
Emily Champa (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) placed sixth in 1:58.63, Devine was seventh with a 1:58.79 and freshman
Bailey Weston (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) finished eighth in 2:00.55.
Other individual placers included Schlomann, who was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (59.32), and senior
McKenzie Asplund (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), who placed eighth in the 400 IM with a 4:52.74.
Competition resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. with preliminaries and concludes in the last session starting at 6 p.m. with event finals and conference awards.
