The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team picked up its first dual wins of the 2016-17 season Saturday with 9-0 victories over Wooster (Ohio) and Elmhurst (Ill.) at Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
 
Against Wooster (1-3), the Warhawks (2-2) swept all three doubles matches and didn't look back. Junior Grant Thompson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) and sophomore Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) teamed up at the No. 1 slot for an 8-6 win to give the team an early lead.
 
Sophomore Rory Calabria (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and freshman Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) paired at the second position for an 8-4 triumph, and junior Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and freshman Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) combined at No. 3 for an 8-3 victory.
 
Engelhart (No. 2), Zurowski (No. 4) and Monterroso (No. 6) each posted straight-set wins in singles. After Zurowski made it 4-0, Thompson clinched the match by recovering from a first-set defeat for a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) win at the No. 1 position.
 
Calabria and Wood also tallied three-set victories at the Nos. 3 and 5 slots, respectively.
 
In the match against Elmhurst (0-5), UW-Whitewater lost a combined three games in doubles play. Thompson and Engelhar, Calabria and Zurowski and freshmen Brett Conard (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) and Matthew Primozic (Elkhart Lake, Wis./Plymouth) were victorious at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 positions, respectively.
 
Engelhart (No. 1), Zurowski (No. 2) and Wood (No. 3) posted straight-set wins at the top three singles positions to lead the Warhawks. Monterroso was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4, and Primozic claimed a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 5.
 
Conard, who was last on the court, tallied a 6-0, 6-2 win at the sixth slot.
 
UW-Whitewater returns to action Friday as it hosts Ohio Wesleyan at 11 a.m. and Wheaton (Ill.) at 2:30 p.m. at Premier Tennis and Fitness. The team finishes up play for the weekend on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Grinnell (Iowa).
