Box Score 2 The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team opened their four-game Conference series against Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Warhawks (22-2, 13-2 WIAC) took a 18-5 victory after 8 innings in the first game. The second game against the Pointers (13-13, 8-7 WIAC) was called early due to darkness. Play will resume at 11 am tomorrow morning with UWW up 17-8 at the Top of 8.
In game one, the Warhawks' offense was held a little quiet, with only three baserunners through the first few innings. The Pointers used the momentum on defense, to get up a quick lead. UWSP rallied some hits in the second, and hitting a solo home run in the third to go up 2-0.
The Warhawks answered back in the top of the 4th thanks to an
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) solo shot. A two-out single from Daryl Jackson followed by a triple from
Dominik McVay (Mineral Point, Wis./Mineral Point), regained the lead for UWW.
But UW-Stevens Point had another one in them, hitting another solo shot to tie it back up at 3 a-piece. But a huge fifth inning gave the Warhawk offense the momentum to get rolling.
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) led off with his first homer of the day, with
Andy Thies (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles) following it up with a 3-run jack to take a 7-3 lead. The Pointers took the side down in order in the 6th, but the top of the 7th added another 5 runs to the Warhawk total.
Cootway went yard for the second time in the game to lead off the Warhawks. The Warhawks kept moving runners, setting up a grand slam opportunity for
Aaron Holland (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) to put the Warhawks up 13-3.
A two-run Pointer home run kept the game alive, but UW-Whitewater added another 5-runs in the 8th to enforce the run rule.
Scolan finished 3-for-6 from the plate with 4 RBIs, Holland matched the 4 RBIs to lead the Warhawks.
Cade Hansen (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley) earned the win fro UWW, pitching 6.0 innings, only allowing three home runs and fanning 5 batters.
In game two, the Warhawks kept the bats heavy, with another 20-run game to win in 8 innings.
UW-Stevens Point put up 4 runs in the first two innings, but a rally in the 2nd for the Warhawks kept the game close at 4-3.
The Warhawks put together back-to-back 3-run innings in the 4th & 5th to take a 11-4 lead.
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) sent his first home run of the game in the 5th. The Poitners answered back with a 3-run inning of their own in the bottom of the 5th.
The Warhawks answered back quickly with a 6-run spot in the 6th. Cootway sent another 3-run bomb over to give the Warhawks a 17-8 lead. The 7th inning saw 6 consecutive outs before the game was called on Friday night due to darkness.
Play resumed at the top of the 8th on Saturday morning, and the Warhawks quickly put the run-rule into effect with as Cootway hit his third homer of the game.
UW-Stevens Point added two runs, but the Warhawks came away with an 8-inning win, 20-10.
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) finished the game with 3 home runs, batting in 9 runners.
Game 3 and 4 of the series will begin at 11:50 am on Saturday in Stevens Point.
