Warhawk Softball Splits on Day One of IWU Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team split a pair of games in the first day of a tournament in Bloomington, Illinois. The Warhawks took down host Illinois Wesleyan 1-0 before falling to DePauw 9-6.

Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North) tossed another gem and the offense backed her up in the opening game of the tournament. The graduate student threw a complete game two-hitter to improve to 4-0 on the season. She struck out eight and walked just one in the win.

The Warhawks broke the stalemate in the top of the fifth. Kaitlyn Weidemann (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) launched a ball down the left field line that hit the foul pole. After the she safely into the third, the umpires came together for a discussion and came away signaling a homerun. Weidemann jogged home with her second four-bagger of the season to give UWW a 1-0 lead.

Anderson sent the Spartans down in order with a groundout, strikeout and popup in the bottom of the sixth.

Illinois Wesleyan threatened early in the seventh. A Warhawk miscue on a leadoff grounder put a baserunner on. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position. Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) fielded a chopper down the third base line and fired to first after holding the runner at second to register the second out. A pinch hitter grounded out to first base for the final out of the game.

Weidemann had the big hit, the solo shot, to provide the sole run of the game. Wickman went 2-3 in the batter's box.

The Tigers' offense was going from the opening frame as DePauw plated two in the top of the first. The Warhawks cut the lead in half with a run on two hits in the bottom of the second. Koehler got the inning started with a single. A one out walk put two on and Sophia Kinjerski (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) capitalized with a RBI double to left field to make it 2-1.

DePauw responded with a three-run third. UWW got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Maggie Ward (Downers Grove, Ill./North) drew a leadoff walk and Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) followed with a single to left field. Wickman singled in Ward to narrow the gap to 5-2.

The Tigers responded once more plating a run on two hits to extend the lead back to four, 6-2.

In the bottom of the inning, Kinjerski led off with a single in the 5-6 hole. Weidemann tagged her second homer of the day to pull UWW to within two, 6-4. Ward followed with a double down the left field line to chase the Tiger hurler out of the circle. After a DePauw fielding error Wickman ripped a single that brought in one more to make it 6-5.

The Tigers pushed the lead back to two in the top of the sixth. This time it was Kostroski's turn for the response with a solo blast to left field to leadoff the bottom of the frame.

The one-run game turned to a three-run game as the Tigers plated two in the top of the seventh. Kinjerski led off the bottom of the seventh with a double but DePauw shutdown the Warhawk chance at a comeback there.

Kinjerski was stellar at the plate with a perfect 4-4 game including a pair of doubles. Wickman went 3-4 with a pair of RBI.
