Warhawks Fall in Dual at UWSP

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped a dual at UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon. The Warhawk men fell 170-118 and the women's final was 163-133. 

UWW claimed gold in nearly half of the events Saturday with 14 first-place finishes. The Warhawks opened the dual winning the 200-yard medley relay on both sides. Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./) kicked off the women's relay followed by Gianna Gnewuch (Verona, Wis./), Jenna Denton (O'Fallon, Ill./) and Bella Borta (Wonder Lake, Ill./Woodstock) who combined for a time of 1:52.65 for the top time. The men's team was led by Jason Halvert (Whitewater, Wis.), Donny Gramer (Dekalb, Ill./Sycamore) and Ethan Bergman (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) with Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./) anchoring the squad to a time of 1:35.66. 

Nikolina Gallo (Greendale, Wis./) made it three straight UWW wins as the first to touch the wall in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:21.96. Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./) was the top Warhawk in the men's race. He stopped the clock in 10:15.55 to finish as the runner-up. 

Schlueter picked up an individual event win of the day with a time of 1:48.60 in the 200-yard freestyle. Emily Connell (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) was the top swimmer for the Warhawk women in the event. Her time of 2:03.50 was good for third. 

UWW went 1-2 in the men's 100-yard backstroke. Halvert paced the group with a first-place time of 53.16 followed by Ethan Schmohe's (Sullivan, Ill./) 55.03. Denton claimed second in the women's race with a time of 1:01.86. 

In the 100 breaststroke, Hannah Wenszell (West Bend, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual) secured bronze with a time of 1:16.16 while Gramer finished as the runner-up in the men's race with a clocking of 1:01.87. 

The 200 butterfly saw another Warhawk top the leaderboard as Paige Malitz (Wausau, Wis./DC Everest) was the first to come into the wall with a time of 2:33.82. Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) paced the Warhawk men with a second-place time of 2:05.99. 

Borta was tops in the 50 free with a time of 24.93 to win the event by over four-tenths. Schlueter (21.56) and Bergman (22.17) went 1-2 in the men's race. Schlueter was narrowly out-touched in the race -- taking second by just .04. UWW swept the 100 freestyle led by Borta's time of 54.67. Connell came in second with a clocking of 55.60. In the men's race, Halvert and Bergman claimed the top two spots with times of 47.97 and 48.31 respectively. 

Wenszell added another bronze in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:17.15. Schmohe was the runner-up for the men with a time of 2:02.81, just over three-tenths behind the leader. 

Gnewuch held off a Pointer to win the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:40.26. Noah Johnson (DeKalb, Ill./) was the top Warhawk for the men with a third-place time of 2:19.64. 

In the 500 free, Gala Boutin's (San Antonio, Tex./Smithson Valley) time of 5:38.61 was good for third while Weis was clocked in 5:06.92 for second. 

Denton and Halvert each one the 100 fly. Denton claimed the women's race by nearly three seconds with a time of 1:01.11 while Halvert registered a nearly two-second win with a time of 52.68. 

Keller secured gold in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.64 in the men's race. Gallo and Wenszell finished in second and third in the women's race with times of 2:22.73 and 2:24.64 respectively. 

The Warhawk combination of Grace Linstroth (Port Washington, Wis./), Connell, Denton and Borta captured a first place finish in the final swimming event of the day -- the 200 freestyle relay. The four won the event by over six seconds with a time of 1:39.19. The men's squad featuring Bergman, Owen Phillips (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), Gramer and Schlueter finished second with a time of 1:26.48 - less than three-tenths behind the top team in the event. 

Off the diving board, Jersey Schweitzer (Oak Creek, Wis./) led the women with a third-place total of 200.60 on the one-meter board. She finished fourth in the three-meter competition with a total of 175.80.
