The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swim team competed against UW-Eau Claire in a conference meet on Saturday. On the women's side, UW-Eau Claire scored 228 team points to UW-Whitewater's 56. On the men's, the Warhawks tallied 64 total points with the Blugolds scoring 221.
Diving Recap
The meet started off with the diving events. For the
Lydia Wirkkula (West Bend, Wis./West Bend West) and
Maggie Reinert (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warreville South) competed in the 1M Dive for the Warhawks. Wirkkula tallied 148.10 points and Reinert tallied a score of 117.60.
Women's Swim Highlights
The Warhawks first medal of the came from a third place finish by
Gala Boutin (San Antonio, Tex./Smithson Valley) in the 1000m freestyle. Boutin placed in the top three in the 200m IM as well, clocking in at 2:30.96. Fellow Warhawk
Hannah Gault (Moline, Ill./Senior) placed just ahead at 2:27.95, placing second overall.Â
Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) would pick up another third place finish, clocking in at 1:04.81.
Emily Connell (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) placed fifth in both the 50m freestyle and the 100m freestyle. Connell touched in 26.40 in the 50m and 57.40 in the 100m for the two top-five finishes.
Logan Cunningham (Sun Prairie, Wis./East) also added two top-five finishes during the meet. Cunninghame placed third in the 200m breastroke, timing in at 2:51.40. Earlier in the event, Cunningham placed fourth in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:18.77.
For the 200m Butterfly,
Paige Malitz (Wausau, Wis./DC Everest) represented the Warhawks in the Top-three, placing third with a time of 2:06.99. Later on in the event, Malitz swam the 100m butterfly in 1:05.20 for a second place finish. She was joined by fellow Warhawk
Lauryn Moneta (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland), who placed third with a time of 1:09.59.
In one of the last events of the night, the 200m Freestyle relay of Andi Bullman, avan Hennig, Doczy, and Connell placed second overall, touching with a time of 1:48.94.
Men's Swim Highlights
In the 100m backstroke, the Warhawk men took places three thru five, with Ethan Schmoe at 55.98,
Noah Johnson (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) at 57.45 and
Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford) at 57.53. Schmoe was only 0.04 seconds away from the second-place Blugold swimmer.
Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) picked up a second place finish in the 100m Breaststroke, timing in at 1:01.84, Schlueter earned another top-two finish, with a 22.14 second 50m Freestyle, only 0.06 seconds away from first place.
Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) and
Matt Sipin (Round Lake, Ill./Grayslake Central) swam together in the 500m freestyle. Keller touched first at 5:14.74 follorwed by Sipin at 5:16.51. The two placed second and third in the event.Â
In the 100m Butterfly,
Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford),
Matt Ozog (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin), and Schmoe, all finished within 2 seconds of each other for 2nd-thru-4th place. Bergman clocked in at 54.68 with Ozog and Schmore following at 55.32 and 56.28, respectively.
Ozog, along with Phillips,
Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./Burlington), and
Isaac Schroeder (Waukesha, Wis./) Â took the 2nd-thru-5th in the 200m IM. Ozog placed second with a time of 1:57.82, followed by Phillips-2:06.99, Weis-2:09.97, and Schroeder-2:11.94.
Schlueter, Gramer, Phillips, and Bergman made up the second-place 200m Freestyle relay team that clocked in at 1:29.26 in one of the last events of the night.
The Warhawks will compete in their last home meet of the 2023-24 season next Saturday, February 3rd against UW-La Crosse. The meet is set to begin at 1 PM. After that dual, the Warhawks will prepare for the WIAC Championships on February 14th thru the 17th.Â
