Warhawks Host Blugolds, Honor Seniors

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming program honored its seniors during a dual meet with UW-Eau Claire Saturday. The Warhawk women fell 187-59 and the men 201-52. 

The UWW women were paced by three first place finishes including a pair from Zaria Terry (Madison, Wis./La Follette). Terry was tops in the 50 free with a time of 24.65 while Emily Connell (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) finished fifth in the event. Terry also came into the wall first in the 100 butterfly registering a time of 59.07. Gianna Gnewuch (Madison, Wis./Verona Area) also posted a gold time with a clocking of 2:13.68 in the 200 backstroke. Teammate Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) was third in the event. 

The Warhawk men were highlighted by a number of runner-up finishes Saturday. David Cummings (Janesville, Wis./Craig) was second in the 50 free with a time of 23.12. Jalen Stimes (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) stopped the clock in 2:07.07 for second in the 200 backstroke and Matt Sipin (Round Lake, Ill./Grayslake Central) registered a time of 2:07.66 for second in the 200 butterfly. Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) picked up another silver with a clocking of 4:23.30 in the 400 individual medley. In the 100 fly, Ethan Bergman's (Racine, Wis./Bradford) time of 54.27 was second-best with Matthew Ozog (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) finished fourth in the event.

Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) registered one of the tightest races of the day. He was out-touched by just .05 for second (48.08) in the 100 free. Bergman added fourth-place points to the team total in the event. 

Other top finishers for UWW include Connell (56.55, 3rd) in the 100 free; Gnewuch (2:08.04, 5th) and Keller (1:52.92, 4th) in the 200 free; Gabby Sponseller (Goshen, Ind./Concord) (5:39.81, 6th) and Dan Emary (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) (5:23.43, 5th) in the 500 free; Brady Peetz (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) (11:02.37, 4th) in the 1000 free; Ciara Hynes (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) (1:07.42, 4th) and Kevin Chang (Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial) (1:02.12, 5th) in the 100 back; Sponseller (1:10.84, 2nd) and Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) (1:00.70, 3rd) in the 100 breaststroke; Grace Jasken (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) (2:45.74, 4th) in the 200 breaststroke; and Hannah Gault (Moline, Ill./Senior) (5:14.04, 4th) in the 400 IM. 

In the relays, the top finishing relays for the men and women were second in the meet. Sponseller, Maren McDonnell (West Bend, Wis./East), Connell and Terry combined for a time of 1:43.54 and Bergman, Tony Mrozowski, Schlueter and Gramer came into the wall in 1:28.22. Meanwhile, both top 200 medley relay squads came away with bronze. Gnewuch, Sponseller, Naomi Hamerla (Lac Du Flambeau, Wis./Lakeland Union) and Terry were clocked in 1:54.43 while the combination of Ethan Coons (Neenah, Wis./Neenah), Gramer, Ozog and Bergman registered a time of 1:39.27 on the men's side.
