Day 1 Recap
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up competition Saturday at the two-day Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships (presented by Culver's) at UW-La Crosse.
The Warhawk men and women each placed fifth. The men totaled 88 team points and the women amassed 57.
Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) highlighted the day for the women with a school record performance in the heptathlon. She captured her first WIAC championship with a score of 4523, topping JoLyn Owen's previous record of 4410 from 2010 and entering the top 10 in NCAA Division III in the event.
Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker) collected honorable mention all-conference with a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.97. She added a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a PR of 25.16.
Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) placed among the top five in a pair of events. After qualifying second with a personal record of 2:13.97 on Friday, Fassbender placed fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:17.85 on Saturday. She earned another spot on the podium with a 4:38.29 in the 1,500-meter run, also good for fifth place.
Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) registered her second top-eight finish of the weekend, placing fifth in the 5,000-meter run in 18:34.22.
Kiara McKowen (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) found a place on the podium in the high jump with a career-best height of 5-00.25 (1.53 meters), good for eighth place.
For the men,
Brayden Zettle (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) and
Shelvin Garrett II (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) each entered the top 20 in the nation and placed third and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump. Zettle established a personal best with a 48-00.50 (14.64 meters) for honorable mention All-WIAC honors, while Garrett registered a season-best 47-10.00 (14.58 meters).
Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) ascended into the nation's top 10 in the 110-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 14.37, good for a runner-up finish and All-WIAC accolades.
Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) also reached the podium, placing sixth in a personal record 14.78 seconds, and added fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles in a career-best 55.06 seconds.
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) and
Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run. Patzka completed the race in 14:40.98 to earn honorable mention all-conference accolades, while Schlender finished soon after in 14:49.38.
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) collected fifth place in the 1,500-meter run in a personal-best 3:49.49 and sixth in the 800-meter run in 1:54.24, one day after tallying a career record 1:53.22 in the preliminary race.
Josh Krystosek (Palmyra, Wis./Palmyra-Eagle) finished fifth in the high jump with a height of 6-05.50 (1.97 meters).
UW-Whitewater's 4x100-meter relay team of
D'Angelo Dear (Green Bay, Wis./Preble),
Carsen Rindt (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran),
Lindsey Henderson-Zintz (Madison, Wis./La Follette) and
Victor Rinaldi (Medford, Wis./Medford) combined for a fourth-place finish in the event with a time of 41.51 seconds. The men's 4x400-meter relay team also earned a top-four finish as
Noah Selensky (Franklin, Wis./Franklin),
Luke Zanis (St. Charles, Ill./North) Will Kaashagen (Cambridge, Wis./Cambridge) and
Zach Miller (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) crossed the finish line in 3:20.45.
The Warhawks will compete in last chance meets over the next two weeks prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which are scheduled for May 26-28 in Geneva, Ohio.
