WIAC Track & Field Championships: Day Two Recap

Women 4th (59.5 pts), Men 5th (66 pts) after final day of competition

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's & women's track teams wrapped up the WIAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday. The women's team finished 4th overall, scoring 59.5 total team points. The men's team finished 5th, tallying 66 points. 

The Women's 4x100 team placed second overall, timing at 46.41. Danielle Pouska (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs), Alyssa Stacy (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), Kelly Huerta (McHenry, Ill./McHenry), & Cici Stennett (Barrington, Ill./Barrington). Huerta & Stennett both had individual success in the 100m finals. Stennett placed third overall with a 12.08 finish, followed closely by Huerta with a 12.12 for 4th place. 

On the men's side of the 100m, Sam Vargas (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and Kayden Baumgart (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) both reached the finals on Saturday. Vargas's time of 10.40 in the finals earned him a bronze medal, with Baumgaurt timing at 10.66 to finish 7th in the event. 

Huerta & Stennett both qualified for the finals in the 200m as well, finishing 3rd & 4th in the event as well. Huerta placed 3rd with a 24.46, with Stennett crossing at 24.67. Hannah Bilodeau-Wahl (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) added 5th place (25.08) for the three Warhawks in the event. Bilodeau-Wahl also appeared in the 400m finals, finishing 4th overall with a time of 56.58, a personal best in the event.

Chris Kalies (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) earned bronze in the men's 400m, timing in at 48.20 for a new personal best. Kalies also competed in the 200m finals, placing 6th overall with a time of 22.07.

In the hurdles iteration of the 400m, Jack Erickson (Belleville, Wis./Belleville) represented the Warhawks in the final. Erickson placed 6th overall with a time of 53.98.

In the distance events, Katie Erb (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) had a podium finish in the women's 1500m, placing 5th overall with a 4:43.48 time. On the men's side, Matt Andreano added to the team total with a 7th-place finish (3:55.84). In the 800m, Rhett Reuter (Darlington, Wis./Darlington) placed 7th overall in the finals with a 1:52.69.

The Warhawks field events also had some podium finishes on Saturday. In the women's triple jump, Lexie Weier (Mineral Point, WI/Mineral Point) added to the team total with an 8th place finish with a 11.25m (36-11.00) leap on her second attempt.

Caitlin Zingsheim (Milton, Wis./Milton) placed third overall in the discus, recording a new personal best in the event by over two meters. Zingsheim recorded a 44.76m (146-10.00) toss on her first throw of finals for the bronze medal.

In the men's high jump, three Warhawks were among the top-five finishers. Daniel Nickel (Marshall, Wis./Marshall) led the way, clearing the 2.02 (6-7.50) bar for a silver medal. Jer'Von Anderson (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) & Ben Bunton (Hartford, Wis./Hartford) finished 4th & 5th respectively, both clearing the 1.97m (6-5.50) bar. In the women's high jump, Brynn Fuertsenberg placed 4th overall, reaching 1.58m (5-2.25). 

Over the next two weeks, the Warhawk track & field teams will compete in various Last Chance Meets, aiming to improve times & marks ahead of the NCAA Outdoor Championship, scheduled for May 21st thru 23rd in La Crosse, WI.
