Men, Women Each Among Top Five After WIAC Day 1

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams finished up Friday's first day at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships (presented by Culver's) at UW-La Crosse.
 
The Warhawk men are fourth with a total of 31 team points, while the women are tied for fifth with 20 team points following the first day of competition.
 
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) led the men with a standout performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, taking home the title in the event with a career-best time of 8:56.87, good for second in NCAA Division III as of Friday night. His mark is also the second-fastest personal record time in program history.
 
Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson), David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) and Curtis Pfeil (West Bend, Wis./West) joined Patzka with All-WIAC honors in their respective events. Martin claimed third place in the hammer throw with a career record distance of 182-05 (55.60 meters), good for a top 15 mark in the nation. Fassbender earned his top-three finish in the 10,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 30:55.51. Pfeil earned his career best in the javelin throw with a 169-00 (51.51 meters), good for third place in the event.
 
Chris Bitz (Brookfield, Wis./East) scored in the pole vault with his height of 14-11.00 (4.55 meters), good for sixth place and a tie for his personal best.
 
Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) qualified for finals in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles. He placed among the top five in both preliminaries with times of 15.08 in the 110, good for fifth, and 55.39 in the 400, good for third.
 
Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) won the preliminary race in the 110 hurdles with his time of 14.84. Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) qualified fourth in the 800-meter run in a personal record 1:53.22.
 
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) highlighted the day for the women with another school record and WIAC championship performance in the pole vault. Her height of 12-06.75 (3.83 meters) currently ranks among the nation's top five.
 
Two Warhawks reached the podium in the javelin throw. Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) tossed a 117-10 (35.93 meters), good for fifth place, and Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker) posted a career-best 116-10 (35.61 meters) to finish sixth.
 
Kenni Czarnecki (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) scored in the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 155-02 (47.29 meters), good for eighth place.
 
On the track, Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) claimed seventh place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in a personal record 11:25.47.
 
Shelton qualified for finals in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. She tallied a 12.31 in the 100, good for fourth place, and a career best 25.75 in the 200, good for seventh.
 
Through four events in the heptathlon, Missiaen leads heading into the final day with a running score of 2624.
 
Competition resumes Saturday with multi events at 10:30 a.m., field events at 12 p.m. and track events at 2:30 p.m.
