The No. 5 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team is set to host the 2022 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament (presented by Culver's) this Thursday-Saturday at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
The Warhawks (33-6 overall) are the tournament's top seed after claiming the regular season championship for the fifth consecutive season and 21st time in program history with a 25-3 league record. UW-W will face No. 4 seed UW-Oshkosh to begin postseason play Thursday at 1 p.m.
Second-seeded UW-Stevens Point will take on third-seeded UW-La Crosse to start the tournament Thursday at 10 a.m.
The winner of the conference tournament will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins May 20.
UW-Whitewater enters the week on an 18-game winning streak, the longest active run without a loss in NCAA Division III. The team is currently ranked fifth in the nation in both the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Poll.
Second baseman
Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) leads the offense with a .377 batting average to go along with nine doubles, three home runs, 29 runs batted in, 34 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. First baseman
Nick Paget (New Berlin, Wis./West) enters the week with a .371 average and a team-best 17 exta base hits, including four homers.
Shortstop
Bennett Frazer (Hobart, Wis./Oconto) leads the team with 15 stolen bases and is batting .361 with 25 runs scored and 19 RBIs to go with a team-leading .471 on-base percentage. Third baseman
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) has drawn a team-best 26 walks, leading to a .425 on-base percentage to complement a .300 batting average.
Catcher
Ryan Norton (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) has totaled seven doubles, four home runs, 29 RBIs and 10 stolen bases to go along with his .311 average.
Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) owns four home runs and 35 RBIs, good for second on the team, primarily in the designated hitter role.
The Warhawks' outfield contingent of
Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington),
Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) have also enjoyed strong seasons at the plate. Campbell owns a .349 batting average with a team-high seven home runs to go with 32 RBIs and 11 stolen bases, while DeMeyer leads the team with 43 RBIs and is hitting .327 with nine doubles, five home runs and 13 stolen bases.
In his first year with the team, Scolan leads UW-W with 43 runs scored to go with a .309 average and a .423 on-base percentage.
Westin Muir (Highlands Ranch, Colo./St. Charles North (Ill.)) and
Kade Lancour (Nekoosa, Wis./Nekoosa) lead the UW-Whitewater pitching staff entering tournament play. Muir is 9-1 with a 2.08 earned run average in 69 1/3 innings over 11 appearances. He recently passed former teammate
Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) for the program's all-time lead in career strikeouts and has a team-best 80 entering Thursday's game.
Lancour is 8-0 with a 2.17 ERA in 66 1/3 innings over 11 appearances (10 starts). He has tallied 77 strikeouts and has one save.
Cam Anfang (Sullivan, Wis./Jefferson) and
Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) have started eight and seven games, respectively, in 2022. Anfang owns a 4-0 record with a 2.70 ERA with 60 strikeouts over 50 innings. Fox is 3-1 with a 5.36 ERA in 45 1/3 innings of work.
Cade Berendt (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) owns the most relief appearances (17) and total appearances (20) of anyone on the team. He is 6-0 with a 2.59 ERA in 48 2/3 innings with 65 strikeouts against eight walks.
Nick Rector (Sewell, N.J./Clearview Regional), who is 1-0 with a 2.42 ERA and two saves in 22 1/3 innings, has also emerged as a top option out of the bullpen.
UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh last played April 3-4 at Miller Stadium. The Warhawks took three of four games in the series, while the Titans won the finale by a 9-0 score.
The Titans (22-17 overall) finished fourth in the WIAC with a 16-12 league record, most recently splitting a doubleheader at UW-Platteville on Monday to close the regular season.
