The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team is ninth and only 12 strokes back of the leader following Saturday's first round of the Wartburg Fall Invitational at Prairie Links Golf Course in Waverly, Iowa.
The Warhawks carded a team score of 305 and are in a logjam of eight teams separated by only six strokes.
Madi LaPaz (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) led UW-Whitewater with an opening-round 74, the lowest 18-hole score of her career, and is tied for 12th place.
Ashton Sinak (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and
Elizabeth Johnson (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) are tied for 24th after firing matching scores of 76.
Kallie Lux (Janesville, Wis./Craig) is tied for 41st with a 79, and
Lily Sheppard (Sherwood, Wis./Kaukauna) is tied for 44th in the 97-player field with an 80.
Haley Myers (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) competed as an individual and is tied for 37th following her first-round 78, a career best.
Final round action is set for Sunday.
