The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's cross country teams competed for the first time in nearly 22 months Saturday, winning UW-Platteville's Pioneer Gender Equity Invitational at Cole Acres Golf Course in Cuba City, Wis.
The Warhawk men secured each of the top six spots in the individual standings and seven of the top 10.
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) led the group and topped the field of 46 runners with a time of 25:22.1 in the 8-kilometer race.
Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) and
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) followed closely behind with times of 25:34.7 and 25:34.8, respectively.
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) placed fourth with a 26:13.6, and
Kyle Neuroth (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) finished fifth with a 26:21.5.
Chris Allen (Downers Grove, Ill./North) and
Christian Seagren (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) rounded out UW-Whitewater's varsity seven. Allen crossed the finish line in 26:35.1, good for sixth place overall, and Seagren finished eight with his time of 27:08.2.
The UW-W women earned two of the top three spots and four of the top 10 in the 26-runner field.
Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) placed second overall to lead the Warhawks, completing the 6-kilometer track in a time of 24:27.7.
Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) finished third in 24:35.5.
Lauren Haas (Jefferson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and
Roxanne Temple (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) made their UW-Whitewater debuts in seventh and ninth place, respectively. Haas recorded a time of 25:08.6, and Temple finished her race in 25:19.6.
Other varsity finishers included
Jill Cavanaugh (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington),
Diane Flade (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) and
Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy). Cavanaugh placed 13th in 26:07.1, while Flade crossed the finish line in 26:19.1, good for 14th overall. Niehueser finished 17th with her time of 27:33.0.
The Warhawks host the Tom Hoffman Invitational next Saturday, Sept. 18, starting with the women's 6K race at 10 a.m. and continuing with the men's 8K competition at 10:45 a.m. UW-Whitewater will celebrate Senior Day and Parents Day at the meet.
