Fick to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award (June 2014)
Tom Fick, the sports information director at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater from 1976-2014, has earned the 2021 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tom Butler Award for his outstanding media coverage to conference athletics.
Fick oversaw communications for all of the Warhawks' teams for nearly four decades, and helped UW-Whitewater transition from the NAIA and Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) to NCAA membership. The Warhawks claimed 18 national team championships during his tenure.
Fick mentored dozens of student workers during his time at UW-W, and served as a volunteer in media relations for three Olympics committees, the Boston Marathon, the Pan American Games, the Badger State Games and other organizations.
"Tom's hard work and achievements during his three-plus decades at UW-Whitewater are impressive, but his legacy reaches far beyond what he did on a day-to-day basis for Warhawk Athletics," Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Ryan Callahan said. "He went above and beyond to mentor his student workers, who have gone on to become successful professionals and leaders in their communities. He has also been an active volunteer, lending his skills to numerous local, regional and national operations.
"Tom's coverage of our sports was a key ingredient in the growth and success of our programs," Callahan said. "His loyalty and dedication to the athletic department and to the WIAC were unwavering, and we are thrilled to see him be recognized."
Fick was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the WIAC Special Recognition Award in 2014. He was inducted into the UW-Whitewater Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017.
