2021 All-WIAC Baseball Team
Ten members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team were honored for their performances this spring as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference released its 2021 all-conference team.
Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) was named the WIAC Pitcher of the Year and is the third Warhawk to garner the award in the last four seasons.
O'Sullivan was joined on the first team by pitchers
Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln),
Westin Muir (Highlands Ranch, Colo./St. Charles North (Ill.)) and
Connor Spear (Highland, Ind./Mount Carmel (Ill.)) as well as infielders
Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and
Sam Vomhof (DeForest, Wis./DeForest).
Honorable mention selections included infielders Brandl and
Tucker Criswell (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles), outfielders
Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union), and
Connor Moroder (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) as both a pitcher and utility player.
All 10 helped the Warhawks sweep the WIAC regular season and tournament championships and reach the NCAA Tournament, which begins Thursday in Whitewater. UW-W enters the regional tournament with a 37-5 record, including a 22-4 mark in conference regular season play.
O'Sullivan, now a two-time first team pitcher, was a three-time WIAC Kwik Trip Pitcher of the Week during the regular season. He currently leads the league in wins (9-0 record), strikeouts (109), innings pitched (73 2/3), strikeouts per nine innings (13.32) and WHIP (0.83), and ranks among the top five in starts (10), earned run average (1.47), hits per nine innings (5.99), strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.08) and opposing batting average (.188).
Brandl owns a 6-1 record with one save on the mound and ranks fourth in the WIAC in ERA (1.99) and opposing batting average (.199). At the plate, he is batting .367 with six doubles, 27 runs scored and 15 runs batted in over 29 games.
Muir, a two-year first team pitcher, leads the league in starts (11), ERA (1.27) and opposing batting average (.175), and is second in wins (8-1 record), strikeouts (76) and hits allowed per nine innings (5.65). He was selected WIAC Kwik Trip Pitcher of the Week for April 19-25.
Spear, who was named to the first team in 2019 as primarily a reliever, has made eight starts in 2021, and owns a 6-0 record in 55 2/3 innings pitched. He is among the top five in the conference in ERA (2.26), hits allowed per nine innings (5.66), WHIP (0.95), opposing batting average (.177) and runners picked off (5). Spear was the WIAC Kwik Trip Pitcher of the Week for March 29-April 4.
Santoro, a two-year first team shortstop, ranks fifth in the league in batting average (.385) and is also among the top five in runs scored (52), hits (65), stolen bases (19) and fielding assists (96). He ranks as the toughest in the WIAC to strike out, with one strikeout ever 21.1 at-bats entering Thursday's game.
In his first full season as a Warhawk, Vomhof is batting a team-leading .408, good for third in the conference. The second baseman is tied for first in the league in triples (5) and tied for second in sacrifice flies (5).
Criswell, a graduate transfer in his first season at UW-Whitewater, is hitting .374 for the year and owns a .480 on-base percentage, good for fifth in the league. The third baseman has posted 14 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 25 RBIs in 36 games so far.
DeMeyer, who plays primarily in right field, leads the team and ranks fourth in the WIAC with a .485 on-base percentage, and is third in walks (28) and tied for second in sacrifice flies (5). He is batting .369 with 13 doubles, three home runs, 44 runs scored and 40 RBIs.
Korman enters the NCAA Tournament with a league-leading 59 RBIs (1.44 per game), and is second in the WIAC with 19 doubles. The left fielder is hitting .379 with a team-best seven homers.
Moroder has played first base, designated hitter and pitcher for UW-Whitewater in 2021. He was selected WIAC Kwik Trip Position Player of the Week for April 19-25. For the year, he is batting .400 (20-for-50) with seven doubles and 21 RBIs, and is 3-0 with a 3.73 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings over 16 appearances on the mound.
Outfielder
Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) is UW-Whitewater's representative on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
