The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's cross country teams each won the season-opening Tom Hoffman Invitational at the UW-Whitewater Cross Country Trails.
The Warhawk men claimed the top two spots and three of the top five to finish with 21 points, more than 50 better than runner-up UW-Platteville.
The UW-Whitewater women tied Edgewood for first place with 35 points but were declared the team champion by virtue of having three of their top five runners finish higher than the Eagles' top five.
Junior
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) led the men with a time of 26:03.8, running away from the field by more than 45 seconds. Junior
Kyle Neuroth (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) finished as runner-up with a 26:49.9, and junior
Conner Hackett (Darlington, Wis./Darlington) placed fifth in 27:59.7.
Freshman
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) finished eighth with a time of 28:10.7, and junior
Clinten Woerishofer (Appleton, Wis./North) tallied a 28:36.3 to place 10th overall.
Other varsity finishers included junior
Brian Kuehl (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and freshman
Sam Uhrich (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam). Kuehl crossed the finish line in 28:54.4, good for 13th, and Uhrich posted a 29:02.8, good for 14th.
Junior
Jessie Braun (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) claimed the title on the women's side with a time of 24:17.8, nearly 17 seconds faster than the runner-up. Junior
Sydney Prestifilippo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) crossed the finish line third with a 24:44.2, and freshman
Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) earned a top-10 finish in her collegiate debut by placing eighth in 26:06.0.
The Warhawks' other top finishers in a pack, placed 12th through 15th. Freshman
Alyssa Dobbs (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) led the group with a 26:29.5, and sophomore
Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy) placed just behind in 26:37.1. Freshman
Jill Cavanaugh (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington) was next in 26:42.5, and junior
Julia Fewell (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) rounded out the pack with a 26:48.8.
UW-Whitewater heads to the UW-Oshkosh Titan Fall Classic this Friday. The women's 6K begins at 5 p.m., with the men's 8K set for a 5:45 start.
