HOUSTON – For the second year in a row, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team survived the 54-hole cut and advanced to the final round of the NCAA Division III Championship at Bay Oaks Country Club.
The Warhawks improved their score for the third straight day Thursday, carding a 321 for a three-day total of 973 (328-324-321). The team is tied with St. Mary's (Ind.) and five strokes ahead of Transylvania (Ky.), the final team above the cut line.
UW-Whitewater trails 12th-place Washington and Lee (Va.) by 12 strokes entering Friday's final round.
Junior
Ashley Hofmeister (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) led the Warhawks on Thursday with a 75, the lowest score of her seven career rounds at the national tournament. Hofmeister was even after the front nine before finishing with a 39 on the back, and stands in a tie for 46th in the 125-player field heading into Friday with a 239 (79-85-75).
Senior
Maddie McCue (Milton, Wis./Milton) fired an 81 and is tied for 70th through three rounds with a 247 (87-79-81). Senior
Kaitlin Bowe (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) posted an 82, including a one-over par 37 on the front nine, to bring her three-day total to 257 (89-86-82), good for 91st.
Junior
CheyAnn Knudsen (Milton, Wis./Milton) recorded an 83 and is tied for 56th heading into Friday with a 242 (81-78-83). Junior
Kelly Storti (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) registered an 85 and is tied for 72nd at 248 (81-82-85).
The Warhawks tee off Friday morning at 7:40 a.m. on the 10th hole of the course.
