The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team posted identical first and second rounds over the weekend at the annual UW-Whitewater Spring Fling, tallying a final-round 326 in Saturday's final round to place third out of 16 teams.
The Warhawks carded a 652 (326-326) for the tournament, only two strokes behind runner-up Grinnell (Iowa). Carleton (Minn.), the top-ranked team in the nation, won the event.
Juniors
Ashley Hofmeister (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and
CheyAnn Knudsen (Milton, Wis./Milton) each earned All-Tournament Team honors by virtue of top 10 finishes.
Hofmeister erased four strokes from her opening round score to place second overall with a 152 (78-74), just two strokes off the winning pace. The round tied her best score of the season.
Knudsen recorded a 161 (78-83) for the weekend to finish ninth in the 85-player field.
Freshman
Ashton Sinak (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) completed the tournament in a tie for 18th with a consistent 168 (84-84). Senior
Kaitlin Bowe (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) finished 21st with a 171 (86-85) competing in her final home tournament.
Senior
Maddie McCue (Milton, Wis./Milton) improved her first-round score by seven strokes on her way to a 193 (100-93) for the weekend, good for 56th place.
UW-Whitewater's "B" team earned a ninth-place finish with a team score of 722 (363-359). Junior
Kelly Storti (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) led the squad with a 164 (84-80), good for a tie for 13th overall, and senior
Sabrina Schreck (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) improved by six strokes in the second round for her 172 (89-83), good for a tie for 22nd.
Freshman
Lauren Winter (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) tallied a 189 (94-95) to finish 52nd, and freshman
Billie Jo Parker (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) tied for 61st with a 197 (96-101).
Senior
Breanna Bertschinger (Waterford, Wis./Union) competed as an individual and carded a 194 (96-98) to place 57th in her final home tournament.
Prior to Friday's round, Bertschinger, Bowe, McCue and Schreck were recognized along with seniors from all competing teams. The foursome played an integral role in the Warhawks' back-to-back Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.
UW-Whitewater closes regular season competition next Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, at the Augustana Invitational at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.
